Learning Activities

Activity 3: Migrants in the news

By reading articles published in different print and Internet sources, students will discover the prevalence of various migration issues in today's world.

Process

  1. Ask students to collect at least five newspaper clippings/Internet articles related to migration concerning different regions of the world. (Use list of news resources and media categories provided)
  2. Based on their findings, ask students to observe what kinds of stories are reported, and what are the most common themes and messages. Follow with a class discussion.
  3. Then, ask students to find examples of positive news stories and negative news stories related to migration (use list of news resources and media categories provided). Ask them to reflect on what kind of story is easier to find and why they think that is the case. Follow with a class discussion.

Extension

In groups, students are assigned to research a particular theme related to migration: development, trade, human rights, refugees, temporary workers, women, human trafficking, irregular workers, immigration policy, UN Conventions, etc.

Groups write a report on their findings, including: a synopsis of the stories, were they positive or negative? What was the position of the author? What did they already know? What did they learn? What would they still like to know?
