Activity 2: Rights of the Child Photo Essay

This multimedia activity introduces students to the concept of human rights and children's rights, especially in relation to basic education.

Process

1. Introduce students to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: what is it, why is it important? Point out the two most important articles related to education:
  • Ariticle 28 (Right to education): Children have a right to an education. Discipline in schools should respect children's human dignity. Primary education should be free. Wealthy countries should help poorer countries achieve this.
  • Article 29 (Goals of education): Education should develop each child's personality and talents to the full. It should encourage children to respect their parents, and their own and other cultures.

2. Ask students to view and read the UNICEF photo essay (Part 1 & Part 2) based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Each photo corresponds to one or two articles in the Convention.
3. Refer to the text version of the Convention (print out the child-friendly poster  for the classroom; print out child-friendly flyer for each student) (See Internet links below)
4. Assign students one or two articles each (depending on the class size).
5. Ask students to find their own images (photo, cartoon, illustration) that relate to their specific article (depicts it/shows the consequences). See Image Resources for ideas on finding images.
6. Students present their article and image to the class. This could be done using Powerpoint, as a class handout, etc.
7. Alternatively, this could be an assignment to hand in.

Extension

Divide class into groups and ask groups to find the articles they think relate to education. This is followed by a class discussion.

After the initial brainstorm, refer to UNICEF Voices of Youth as a reference. (See the "Right to learn" section and read about different articles in the Convention on the Rights of the Child that are related to education)
